Viewers were left screaming at their TV screens amid dramatic scenes in the gripping finale of the BBC's psychological thriller The Replacement.

After three weeks of trying to unpick the mystery surrounding evil architect Paula Reece, played by Vicky McClure, fans finally learned on Tuesday night that her daughter had been killed in a hit-and-run accident - and she had been pretending she was still alive.

Protagonist Ellen Rooney's discovery about Paula saw the villain throwing herself down the stairs in an attempt to frame her nemesis for attempted murder - leading viewers to label her an 'evil b****'.

One viewer wrote: 'She didn't touch her!!!' while others labelled her as 'pure twisted evil'.

However in a tense sequence before Paula's revelation, fans were initially left torn as to who the real 'psycho' was. One Twitter user commented: '#TheReplacement really is drama at its finest. But who's the biggest psycho?'

Ever since Paula took on maternity cover for the successful architect at the start of the mini-series, Ellen had been hellbent on her mission to expose her - and in tonight's nail-biting finale she finally got results, albeit nearly at the cost of her own life.

The heroine was left trapped in the same car that was involved in the car accident with baby Caris after swallowing a bottle of blue pills in a bid to save her own daughter's life.

Seizing her chance, Paula then kidnapped baby Leah - telling Ellen she would have to kill herself if she wanted to save her daughter.

'She needs a mother Ellen. I can’t have her I know that, but I can’t let you have her back,' Paula chillingly announced.

Just moments earlier, Paula had hinted at being involved in the murder of their boss Kay, who appeared to throw herself from the roof of a library in the first episode.

'She wouldn’t shut up about Caris… Okay? I just wanted her to shut up,' Paula said.

Ellen managed to escape from the car, activating the airbag using the battery from a torch and subsequently rushing to her baby daughter's rescue.

Eventually Paula hands herself in and is arrested after Ellen escapes from the car that she was locked in - appearing to finally get her comeuppance much to viewers' delight

The finale is somewhat ambiguous, as Ellen is seen playing with her daughter in front of Kay's grave and her former boss David arrives - suggesting the pair have ended up together

Paula eventually handed herself over to the police and was arrested, meaning Ellen was finally vindicated - and her husband owed her an apology.

However, she didn't accept his grovelling sorry, especially after he had doubted he was the father of her baby earlier in the series.

Paula had planted a seed that Ellen had had an affair with colleague David - with him later telling Ellen was the reason behind his wife Kay's death and as the pair are seen together in the final scene, viewers are left wondering if they were (or are) together.

The Replacement is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer
