Nikki Reed launches new ethical vegan handbag line

Making moves: While Nikki Reed is perhaps best known for her starring roles in Hollywood hits like Twilight and Thirteen, she is now trying her hand at fashion design with the launch of a new ethical handbag range

  • Morgan runs a label called Freedom of Animals, which is dedicated to creating ethical products and raising awareness about sustainable fashion

She may be best known for her roles in Hollywood hits like Twilight and Thirteen, but away from the bright lights of the silver screen, actress Nikki Reed is busy pursuing another passion - ethical fashion.

But far from following in the footsteps of many actresses-turned-fashion stars, a vast number of whom are guilty of simply lending their face to a brand while knowing very little about the what they are representing, 27-year-old Nikki says her latest fashion collaboration could not be more different.

'I think it goes without saying that people in this industry just put their name on things; everybody understands the lack of authenticity there and what the motive might be,' she told DailyMail.com at a private dinner to celebrate the launch of her new handbag collection with ethical fashion label Freedom of Animals.

'Whereas everything I do, I do it because I live it and I breathe it and I feel it.'

Nikki, who, along with her husband, Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder, is well known for her passionate love of animals, has joined forces with Freedom of Animals designer Morgan Bogle in order to create a range of vegan accessories that she hopes will help to change people's perception of sustainable fashion.

'We can all do something and we can all be a part of change some way, no matter what degree we decide to participate in,' she explained, adding that choosing to embrace ethical fashion doesn't mean that you have to alter every aspect of your life - or feel guilty because you don't meet certain 'criteria' that people associate with being vegan.

'I am the first to say that I have leather shoes and I love them, but we all do,' she explained.

'It's just about appreciating there are other options. And that's the gift that Morgan gave to me, I was like, I'm actually going to start changing some things about myself. This is the next chapter for me.

'I'm going to start buying less leather and discover why it's important to create more of a demand for US–based products.

'Young people want to know what they can do to be a part of the change. They want purpose.'

Nikki and husband Ian hosted a private vegan dinner, prepared by chef Daphne Cheng, for industry supporters like Tara Subkoff and Alexandra Richards, in order to launch the collection, which is made entirely of eco-faux leather, has been vegetable dyed, and has an organic cotton lining.

In other words, the bags are guilt-free - but fit the gorgeous, sleek aesthetic offered by the high-fashion brands which rely on leather.

And they're tapping into a wider social trend where consumers are indulging in cool pieces that support a worthy cause.

Before the dinner, Nikki and husband Ian officially launched her capsule collection of handbags during an event at Bloomingdale's.
