Man 'Punched Through JetBlue Plane Window Because He Was Not Allowed to Sit With His Mother'

A New Jersey man accused of punching and shattering a window on a JetBlue airplane as it departed Orlando, Florida last month was arraigned on federal charges Tuesday.

Robert Ramirez of Hackensack, New Jersey was on board a flight departing from Orlando International Airport on Nov. 2. when he punched out the plane's window after learning he could not sit next to his mother, authorities say.

The incident happened shortly after pulling away from the gate.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by the Orlando Sentinel, Ramirez was upset that he could not sit next to his mother.

Members of the flight crew told Mr Ramirez to sit and soon after, Ramirez broke the window, causing it to detach from the aircraft.

The flight was delayed for roughly one hour while a crew replaced the window.

A federal grand jury in Orlando indicted Ramirez last week on a charge of destruction of an aircraft.

It's not the first time a man has managed to punch out a the window of an airplane.

In 2005, Ryan Marchione of Venice, Fla., was arrested at Tampa International Airport for destruction of an airplane during a flight from Las Vegas, Nevada.

The punch 'basically exposed the exterior of the aircraft,' Assistant U.S. Attorney Ernest Peluso said during a Thursday detention hearing.

'Marchione woke abruptly from his sleep and turned to the passenger seated in 7B ... raised a clenched fist to his shoulder as if he was going to strike the passenger in 7B, then suddenly turned and struck the exterior window,' According to that criminal com[plaint.

'Perhaps it was some sort of a psychotic episode as a result of drug abuse,' his attorney said.
