BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Extensive efforts are being made around the state to clean up the mess Sandy left behind.

Mike Schuh has more.

Superstorm Sandy ripped through Ocean City, sending sand and water tearing through town. In Annapolis, water inundated City Dock up to Memorial Circle. The rising tide had businesses bailing out. And in Baltimore County, as winds shifted overnight, waves crashed over the sea wall in Millers Island. The National Guard was called in to check on residents.

“Isabel was the worst one but this was pretty nasty,” said Warren Bossalina.

“We just cleaned out our basement. We probably had eight to 10 inches of water in the basement,” said Jesse Stolba.

Neighbors say at the height of the storm, the water stretched all the way to a debris line in the front yard across the street. Still, Governor Martin O’Malley said Maryland dodged a bullet.

“This could have been far, far worse for us here than it has been and the people of Maryland deserve a lot of credit for protecting life during this storm,” he said.

In Mount Washington, the storm took down a massive tree and power lines with it. More than 200 trees are down in the city.

“Trees always end up falling. We had one up the street that fell,” said Juan Calvo.

More than 300,000 BGE customers lost power. Crews have restored more than half of those outages.

“We were worried that it would take a long time for the crews to get here and really at first light this morning, the BGE guys were here. It was pretty incredible,” said one resident.

BGE will work around the clock until the lights are on everywhere.
