BALTIMORE (WJZ) –Another water main break is causing serious problems on a Baltimore street.

Alex DeMetrick has more on this break and how long repairs could take.

This new break is not that far from last week’s big break on Charles Street. And like that failure, Monday’s break may have been triggered by the same forces.

It was white water on Madison Street, as it flowed down from Mount Vernon toward the JFX.

A 30-inch diameter water main failed about 8:30 a.m. Monday, gouging up through the asphalt, closing a number of streets along Guilford Avenue and sending Department of Public Works repair teams back to their charts.

Madison is closed between Fallsway to Calvert Street.  Guilford is closed from Monument Street to Madison Street. The Guilford off-ramp from the JFX is also closed.

The first job was shutting the main down. That and the break stopped service nearby.

“We have no water at Center Stage. Our housing over here is where all our actors stay, so the actors are out of water as well,” said Harry Delair, Center Stage.

“We went down to the store to buy a couple of jugs of water, just for the simple fact of hey, we’ll be able to flush the toilet,” said Javier Garcia, of Baltimore.

With the exception of a few cars that had to be towed to safety, no buildings were reported flooded, although a few took precautions.

As for a cause: this and the Charles Street break may be old pipes stressed by shifting ground, from Superstorm Sandy’s heavy rains.

“The ground softens up,” said Kurt Kocher, DPW spokesman. “Water will infiltrate under the asphalt, and there has been a tendency of that happening after rain.”

“I think it’s sad to see the city deal with this on such a regular basis. I’d really like to see the city in a little better shape,” said Isaac Orloff, of Baltimore.

“Age is the most important thing,” Kocher said. “That’s why we’re going to be stepping up the number of mains we’re replacing.  That’s 150 miles. That’s a $300 million investment. So that’s something that really needs to be done, and we’re going to do it.”

Although this latest break is substantial, there are no reports of injuries or flooding. That’s mainly because storm drains handled the water flow. However, there are reports of spotty water outages in the area.

About 19 residences and one business in the 800 block of N Calvert Street lost water.

DPW says some cloudiness may also be experienced and residents and businesses experiencing that should run their water for several minutes until it clears. Removing your aerator from your faucet will expedite the process and keep sediment from becoming trapped. Once your water clears it means it has returned to normal. If you cannot get your water to clear call 311.

DPW says it hopes to minimize water outages by redirecting them to other lines.

An evaluation of infrastructure will take place before repairs begin.
