BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) — The box stores may have been the most popular destination for many Friday, but Pat Warren reports on what had to be a close second–the Kennedy Krieger Festival of Trees at the Fairgrounds.

It’s the must-see Christmas event of the season. 50,000 people came through last year, and 50,000 people can’t be wrong.

It’s the biggest holiday festival on the east coast, with all the magic of Christmas.

“I love Christmas and I love Christmas trees,” Cathy Duvel said.

Cathy Duvel and her daughter Sarah Gray wouldn’t miss it for the world.

“I work at the school, Kennedy Krieger School, the lower school with elementary school kids.

“I love it I have a special needs sister-in-law and it’s very important for us to give back,” Duvel said.

Giving back is a Maryland tradition.

“All the money goes to Kennedy Krieger and everything is done by the volunteers,” said one woman.  “And it’s big and it’s opened up so it’s not crowded. You can get around beautifully.”

Among the attractions, the gingerbread houses. WJZ did one.

“Well, of course I like the one Kai Jackson did, but they’re all great,” said Phillip Culotta.

Bob Schroeder bought the train on the silver platter.

“It had a lot of little pieces so after Christmas I can give a little piece to each one of my six grandchildren. It’s absolutely wonderful,” Schroeder said.

Wonderful in many ways.

Proceeds from the festival benefit patient care, research and education at the Kennedy Krieger Institute.

The Festival of Trees runs through Sunday at the Fairgrounds in Timonium.
