ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ)—By late Tuesday night, we should know who has been elected president of the United States. The polls are open, and millions of people around the county and right here in Maryland are going out to cast their ballots.

Rochelle Ritchie has more on voter turnout and excitement.

From the economy to education, this year’s election is being called critical in stabilizing the country.

Election Day is finally underway and people were out in full force to make their vote count.

“It’s my responsibility to vote,” said one.

A responsibility taken very serious—in some cases, causing heated exchanges between voters as patience wore thin.

“You got people coming in, jumping in front of other people. I mean, it’s just chaos in there. It’s not right,” said Hakim Ali.

One polling station opened up later than expected, causing frustration for those who arrived early to vote.

“I didn’t get a chance because I have to go to work and I will have to come here and stand in another long line just to get my vote in,” said Tamera Jones.

It was a much different story from Howard County.

“It was actually a pretty smooth process, I would say,” said Kate Hanson.

Twelve percent of Marylanders voted early and 80% are expected to vote today. Many are already certain of who and what they are voting for.

“I believe Obama needs another four years,” said a voter.

Some in line are still deciding.

“Once I am standing in line reading this survey, I will figure out what I am going to do when I get inside,” said Chris Brown.

With more than three and a half million voters in Maryland, many will sit back and watch to see if their vote makes the difference they hoped for.

“I think it’s hard to say what’s going to happen. I am anxiously waiting to see what the results are going to be,” said Bryan Geeseman.

Voters can come out until 8 p.m. to cast their ballots.
