GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WJZ) — A head-on collision kills four people in Glen Burnie. Now police are scrambling to figure out what went wrong.

Derek Valcourt has more on the fiery crash.

It’s a heartbreaker. In part because one of the four victims was a child.

Chopper cameras were over the  gruesome scene on Marley Neck Road in Glen Burnie. That’s where two passenger cars collided head-on around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

The accident left a mangled mess of metal in the roads. Officials report one of the cars even overturned and caught fire. Rescuers used sheets to shield the bodies of the two people killed in each car–in all–four dead.

It happened on a remote tree-lined stretch of Marley Neck Road, not far from Freeman Shores Road–forcing traffic to shut down in both directions for more than four hours.

“Our traffic safety unit is investigating on the scene and they haven’t made any determination of a preliminary cause,” said Lt. Francis Tewey, Anne Arundel County Police.

Meaning police aren’t ready to say whether speed, road conditions, driver error or even alcohol were factors.

Police have not yet released the names and ages of the victims–trying to make sure all family members are notified first.

One of the cars had a Maryland license plate–the other reportedly from West Virginia.
