Studies Prove That Excessive Use of Cannabis Can Affect Your Brain

As per recent research, smoking cannabis can be very harmful to our brain. The drug decreases the release of a chemical that is essential for the brain and is known as dopamine. This, in particular, affects the part of the brain that is linked to memory and learning.

Studies have shown that the excessive use of drugs like cocaine and heroin have the same effect on our brain. But now research has proved that cannabis is equally harmful to the brain and decreases its efficiency. If we calculate the average, cannabis addicts start using the drug at the age of 16, and eventually by the age of 20 they are very dependent on marijuana.

Scientists used Positron Emission Tomography (PET) that helps them to track a particular molecule that holds together the dopamine receptors in the brain. This research on cannabis is published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry.
