Mariya Taher spreading awareness about FGM
In what could be described as a very painful experience, Mariya Taher underwent a genital mutilation procedure during her childhood when she went on a holiday in Mumbai in India. She was taken to a run-down building in Mumbai, where she experienced the painful procedure of genital mutilation. Mariya, who is now 33 and lives in Massachusetts, said that she refuses to become a victim of this atrocity and hence raising a voice against this practice. It is important to note that, according to the centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 500,000 women in the United States of America are at the risk of female genital mutilation (FGM). Mariya said that she is motivated to use this bad experience to spread the awareness about this ill practice so that others won’t face the same horrible situation that she had gone through.
